Hello ‘Wrong’, goodbye Cleft

Cleft

Bad news, Cleft are calling it a day. Good news, they’ve just released an incredible new album and live video. Swings and roundabouts. Cleft have always been good. I can’t remember a time when they didn’t sound amazing. When MM first picked them up, just after the release of their incredible Whale Bone EP, they were already well on their was to becoming the band they are today. Loud, technical, talented, professional, personable; it’s no wonder Dan and John have enjoyed such success as a two-piece over the last few years. And somehow, they’ve got better. Their sound has been honed, their songs refined and ideas expanded upon. And their efforts have paid off big time. They’ve shared stages with the… Read More →

So enjoy, and see you there. In no particular order, here are our picks… Chon Technical… Read More →

Exclusive | Watch Cleft Perform Brand New Live Track ‘Me, Sugar’

Cleft Session Video 2

Small Pond have been dominating recently. All these amazing looking live ArcTanGent videos, and now a live session with Cleft – one of our favourite bands. Jeez, chill out guys, you’re making us look bad. We can’t believe it’s been over two years since we wrote our Introducing piece on Manchester’s Cleft. Back then they we’re just two mysterious guys playing this really riff-heavy music somewhere off in the unknown world of the internet. They were just a email; an unknown cosmic entity playing hard and fast melodies. But fast forward two years and Cleft are something else altogether. Not only can we now confirm that they actually exist (we’ve met Dan & John on many occasions, and they’re actually pretty good… Read More →

MM Recommends | Delta Sleep, Axes, Cleft & AMTP in Leeds

Delta Sleep Cleft Axes Alpha Male Tea Party Leeds

Delta Sleep, Axes, Cleft and Alpha Male Tea Party. All playing the same show. In Leeds. On the 28th of October. In previews like this, we normally get straight into it. We normally talk endless shit about what bands are playing a specific gig, what they sound like, and how much we love them. But with this gig, it seems kind of pointless. What else can we say about these four bands, that we haven’t said over and over again? Delta Sleep, Axes, Cleft and Alpha Male Tea Party are four bands we’ve been harping on about for years now, and by now, you’re bound to of heard of them too. And rightly so. All four are doing amazing things… Read More →

Festival Review | ArcTanGent 2014

ArcTanGent Banner 2014

It’s small, nerdy and full to the brim with lesser-known bands and musicians. But we wouldn’t have it any other way. ArcTanGent, again, was flawless. Following on from its stand-out 2013 debut, Bristol’s ArcTanGent has quickly gained a reputation for being one of the UK’s most well-received music festivals. And now a year on, not only have the organisers at ATG managed to deliver yet another great music weekender, but they’ve actually inadvertently created something much better. Thursday Thursday on Fernhill Farm was all about returning bands. Picked from last year’s festival, early entry at the festival saw the building of pressure from the likes of Theo, The Physics House Band, Nordic Giants and more. Baby Godzilla smashed with an endless tirade of wireless noise… Read More →

Exclusive | Watch Alpha Male Tea Party’s new music video

Screen shot 2014-03-11 at 14.09.45

Straight off the back of their 2013 EP Real Ale and Model Rail: The Lonely Man’s Guide to Not Committing Suicide, Liverpool’s brash instrumentalists Alpha Male Tea Party return with a double A single, an impending 2nd album and even a music video… Slap bang in the middle of the modern music orgy we call instrumental music, rubbing themselves violently against the robust thighs of Cleft and up the short, yet toned Scottish calves of Vasquez, three-piece octave crushers Alpha Male Tea Party have been snappin’ necks and – presumingly – cashin’ cheques, with their commanding and devastating mix of standout, up-beat prog, math, and post rock. Having been taken under the musical wings of Manchester’s Superstar Destroyer Records, releasing their most recent… Read More →
