Watch Cousin perform live track ‘Dry Steering On A Wet Road’

Cousin Live

Fuck bass. Fuck low end. Fuck vocals. Fuck linear song structures. Cousin are here. Rejoice. With their early 2015 release, Music To Polish Your Rifle To, still as listenable as ever, it seems Brighton-based instrumental trio Cousin are set for a great Autumn and Winter. With the amount of great instrumental music around these days, it’s often hard to keep up – especially when some of it sounds the same. But Cousin aren’t a band you’re likely to forget. From gritty riffs to immersive and emotive musicianship  – Cousin’s sparse and groove-driven sound has always stood out. And continues to do so in 2015. With a string of dates this October, Cousin have been busy with the guys at Small Pond Recordings, recording a live session of… Read More →

Watch Body Hound tear shit up in Manchester

Body Hound Live Shot

Last month, Body Hound played to a rammed Gullivers in Manchester. And this was the result. Over a year ago, Sheffield-based instrumental four-piece Body Hound released their debut EP, Rhombus Now. A truly ridiculous fucking record. And now, in 2015, we’re still listening, trying to figure out how the hell they did it. After seeing them in Leeds last year, and after catching their incredible set on the main stage at ArcTanGent this August, it’s fair to say they’re not pissing about. Rhombus Now  wasn’t a one off. It wasn’t a bedroom project or a joke. It was the start of something new. Something good. Something unique. Having been up and down the country playing on a bunch of different bills and line-ups,… Read More →

The Physics House Band announce only show of 2015

Physics House Band

Brighton-favorites The Physics House Band have just announced their only gig of 2015. Keeping things very close to their chests, experiment trio The Physics House Band have just put out some news about an upcoming show in Brighton. The trio – who made waves in the experimental community with their debut full length Horizons/Rapture over two years ago – haven’t played a show so far in 2015, and have instead been concentrating on other projects. Breaking their silence, Physics have just released some info about an upcoming show in Brighton this year. Yet to announce a venue, or release tickets, the gig will take place on the 4th of December somewhere in Brighton. Expect an all-star line-up of bands and some… Read More →

Small Pond & Bad Math announce Brighton all dayer with Delta Sleep

BAD POND Brighton All-Dayer

Brighton’s Small Pond Recordings and Bad Math are teaming up to deliver a shit hot day of math rock and other weird stuff at the Green Door Store this October. Friendship! Comaraderie! Teamwork! Banter! These are just a few of the choice phrases that come to mind when we think about Small Pond and Bad Math coming together. It was only a matter of time really – these two Brighton bad-boy heavyweights have been flogging left-field music for a while now, and people have been guzzling it down. So it’s only natural that the two prepare for an emotional and sensual embrace. Set to take on the 10th of October, ‘Bad Pond’ – as it’s been named – will be an all-dayer at the Green Door Store in… Read More →

Exclusive | Watch Axes perform track ‘Real Talk’ live

Axes Live Small Pond

As if you haven’t already heard enough about how good Axes are live… Their first release was a breath of fresh air, and their second was an undeniable triumph, but you just can’t beat the real thing. You can’t beat Axes in the flesh – live, raw, jaunty and disgustingly tight. Of course, we mean actually live – like standing in a venue watching the quartet sweat and bleed. That’s how you should experience the instrumental glory of Axes. But perhaps a close 2nd, we’ve got our hands on a brand new live session from the band, put together by Brighton video sorcerers Small Pond Recordings. And despite Axes’ notorious live sound, this session video of their track ‘Real Talk’ is about as close to the real thing as… Read More →

MM Recommends | Alpha Male Tea Party & Valerian Swing In Leeds

Alpha Male Tea Party, Valerian Swing, Body Hound, Gig, Leeds

Brace yourselves kids, ’cause Alpha Male Tea Party are coming to Leeds at the start of April, and they’re bringing Valerian Swing and Body Hound with them too. Sometimes, when we write a gig preview here at MM, we’ve got a lot to say. There might be a new, completely unheard of band playing a show in fuck-knows-where that we want people to go to, or there might be a festival coming up that has an immense line-up. But, sometimes we have nothing to say. Sometimes there are just gigs. Just great gigs, with great bands that – in our opinion – everyone should already know about. But, the great thing about math rock and instrumental music is, there’s still a fuck load of people… Read More →

Exclusive | Watch Polymath perform new track ‘Castrovalva’

Polymath

Polymath are loud, powerful and new – and they’ve got a brilliant new live session. What more do you need to know? With a mass of pedals, distorted bass, driving rhythms and forceful melodies, Brighton’s Polymath might sound like a lot of other bands from the math rock sphere in 2014, but they’re more than worth your time. Having successfully funded their up-coming EP Reptiles – due for release next year – the instrumental trio are making themselves known, playing shows up and down the country. And teaming up with Small Pond Recordings, Polymath are set to reach even more music fans with the release of their new live session. You can watch Polymath perform ‘Castrovalva’ right now above thanks to the… Read More →

Live Review | Axes & Delta Sleep @ The Underground, Plymouth

Axes Live Plymouth Musical Mathematics

Just when you thought a joint headline tour between 2 of the UK scene’s finest live bands couldn’t get any better, Plymouth gets treated to possibly the finest Sunday night lineup it has ever seen. The Axes / Delta Sleep roadshow rolls into town courtesy of a booking by local multi-instrumentalist Steve Strong, well known for his penchant for all things musically experimental. I must admit to being unfortunate enough to miss the majority of Steve’s own band Remnants Of due to train issues (cheers, Crosscountry!), but one glimpse of their high-energy closer suggests those in attendance were rewarded for making it down early. Up next were Italian 3-piece Tapso II, who weave effects-laden violin into their raw, Shellac-like post-rock… Read More →
