Live Review | Gnarwolves @ Fleece, Bristol

Gnarwolves

Gnarwolves are always on tour. And that’s a good thing. With no disrespect to their excellent trio of EPs and debut long-player, it’s the band’s relentless touring that has brought them to where they stand at the end of 2014. For this extensive UK/EU run, the band have brought along one of Topshelf Records’ standout acts, Prawn. Fresh from releasing their second full-length Kingfisher in August, this current tour is their second run in Europe, after a 2012 tour with Ape Up! to showcase their then-new EP Ships. Pack away your defibrillators, these dudes are trained experts in revival… Both of these bands were busy giving the kiss of life to emo long before we even knew it had left. Unfortunately, despite their valiant work both have stayed criminally under the radar for way too long. Joie de vivre were nearly flatlining themselves. I thought they had given up the ghost, broken up as far as I knew, until they came storming back with their best album to date in We’re All Better Than This. They hit their peak at the right time and are now batting with the big boys. Their 3-song contribution on this EP almost feels like a victory march. It follows the pattern of… Read More →

EP Review | Prawn – ‘Ships’

3128996988-1

Let me ask a quick question. How many record labels in the world would provoke fans to listen to a new band simply on the merits and reputation of the label they’re signed to? For myself, alongside Sargent House and Big Scary Monsters, Topshelf Records have to be the one of ‘those’ labels. “Hey, listen to this new band I like, they’re Prawn from America!” – “errr, alright, I’ll check out a song”. “Hey, listen to this new band I like, Prawn, they’re on Topshelf”. It just evokes a different reaction, and is a testimony to the brilliant things Topshelf (also home to A Great Big Pile Of Leaves andThe World Is A Beautiful Place & I Am No Longer Afraid To Die)… Read More →
