&U&I

Birmingham legends &U&I return with their long-awaited 4-track EP Merci. How long has it been? 3, maybe 4 years? Man, it’s been a while since &U&I released some new music. Thank god for their new EP, Merci. &U&I have always been a constant force in the UK alternative scene. Whilst the Birmingham 3-piece have often had periods of down-time, Thom, Rich and Wiz have always been on hand to deliver some of the most engaging live shows around. But what we’ve really been craving is some new music. Some aggressive, dischordant and unique post-hardcore &U&I-sounding music. And we’ve finally bloody got some. Spotlight | &U&I return with brand new track ‘The Stamp’

&U&I

“If people dig the new EP and people are still wanting to hear the music we make, then who are we to deny them.” &U&I are an institution. They’ve played with some of the UK’s finest, produced some of the best new-age post-hardcore there is and climbed on some the best speaker racks the festival circuit has to offer. But, it’s been over 3 years since they released a record. Which left many of us wondering… “when the fuck are they going to write some new music?” But despite our needy and often overbearing expectations as fans; for bands and artists to produce endless music, regardless of monetary and time constraints – &U&I have recorded a new EP. And it’s really good. So shut… Read More →

Festival Review | ArcTanGent 2014

ArcTanGent Banner 2014

It’s small, nerdy and full to the brim with lesser-known bands and musicians. But we wouldn’t have it any other way. ArcTanGent, again, was flawless. Following on from its stand-out 2013 debut, Bristol’s ArcTanGent has quickly gained a reputation for being one of the UK’s most well-received music festivals. And now a year on, not only have the organisers at ATG managed to deliver yet another great music weekender, but they’ve actually inadvertently created something much better. Thursday Thursday on Fernhill Farm was all about returning bands. Picked from last year’s festival, early entry at the festival saw the building of pressure from the likes of Theo, The Physics House Band, Nordic Giants and more. Baby Godzilla smashed with an endless tirade of wireless noise… Read More →

24th of August is #BlakfishDay

Blakfish Champions

The 24th August will mark five years since the release of ‘Champions’, the debut album from the Birmingham based legends Blakfish, and over four years since the untimely split of the band. And it’s because of this that we are officially(ish), for the third year running, declaring the 24th, BLAKFISH DAY! A day in which we can remember the brilliance and all round groundbreaking music that the four-piece produced for over 10 years. What does BLAKFISH DAY mean? Well, it means remembering the band; listening to their music, wearing their t-shirts, encouraging others to discover them or even just taking a minute out of your day to think ‘what could have been’. But most importantly get on FB, Twitter, Tumblr, whatever and make sure you spread the word on BLAKFISH DAY 2014. Were you at the last ever show? Got all the Albums? Or have you only just heard… Read More →

Producer Spotlight | James Elliott Field

tubelord

A Mr Alan Welsh – the brains behind Colour, Tangled Hair and most recently Someone Died once said, “Cheers to you behind the lens, it’s a shame that every picture is missing a James.” He was, of course, talking about James Elliott Field, close friend and frequent engineer/producer of bands, both past and present; all interlinked by his masterful use of recording equipment and subsequent editing tools. Alan’s words are particularly pertinent to my perception of James, in that he’s always been somewhat of an elusive figure – with very little representing him on the oh so important Internet – yet remains a seemingly integral presence among various independent acts such as Colour, Tubelord, and most recently Tall Ships; who specifically cited him as just that during… Read More →
